Episode 21: Day 31-33

Day 31:

Today I summited Mt. Baden Powell, four miles of climbing that kicked my butt. However, the view from 9,400 ft over Los Angeles was a pretty solid reward.

I ate lunch at the peak with some new friends: PBR, Ghost, Salt Lick, and Speedy Gonzales. We were swarmed by bees, but they were harmless, seemed like they were more interested in collecting our sweat than stinging us.

Hiked 17 miles today, and I couldn’t hike any more.

Day 32:

The plan was to wake up early and make up miles… but my body wasn’t having it; I didn’t even hear my alarm.

Eventually, I did get up, and began hiking. I flew down several miles of downhill, which gave me a much needed confidence booster after the past two sub-par mile days.

At the bottom I found Dusty packing up camp and he was glad to have the company for breakfast (I only ate a Cliff bar that morning since I was running late). Had some really great convos with him about the trail and life in general (I have noticed that hiker conversations get deep really quickly). 

ANOTHER DETOUR. This time to protect an endangered species of tree frog. Hiked the detour with Will and Andy, making some pretty good miles due to the road walk.

24 miles today!

Oh.. And I PASSED THE 400 MILE MARKER!

Day 33:

Early rise! And since I was low on water, I enjoyed the Breakfast of Campions once again (oatmeal, coffee, and instant breakfast cocktail).

ANOTHER DETOUR. This one was optional actually, offered as an alternative to hiking through a poodle-dog-bush heavy section of the trail. Apparently, poodle-dog-bush is in the same category as poison oak and poison ivy as far as “I definitely don’t want to touch that,” so I decided to walk around.
